Why would Prem kumar want Jamal to lose the game? How did he almost succeed in doing it?
Prem Kumar didn’t want Jamal to win because it was his game and Jamal was doing very well, that he could win all the money. Prem Kumar during the break attempted to give Jamal the “answer” by steaming up the bathroom mirror during the break. When Jamal got back to the hot seat , Jamal still didn’t use the “answer” that he was given. Except he asked for a 50/50 and was then faced with the “answer” or another answer and Jamal chose the other answer that he was not given. After the show with one question left. The police arrested Jamal on suspicions of cheating on the game which Prem Kumar openly said that he had called the police. However Jamal returned to the game the next night and won all the money.

OK – some good observations – but why would Prem Kumar want Jamal to lose? Remember the whole of India is watching a slumdog win a game that could change his life?

Prem Kumar was one such success. He embodied the change from nothing to everything, rags to riches. Letting Jamal win would ruin that for him, and he couldn’t have that. He was devious in the way he acted, and showed his emotions, but one can’t help but notice his true motives by the end. – Jonathan

In India if you were born a slumdog, you would stay a slum dog. You would remain poor for the rest of your life. If you were born rich you would be rich for the rest of your life. Prem Kumar didn’t want to accept that Jamal, being a slumdog, could become rich. So he did everything in his power of control to makes Jamal lose like try and give him the wrong answer and then calling the police on him accusing him of cheating. Prem Kumar wanted Jamal to stay a slumdog.
